Movies

December 28th, 2007 at 04:51 pm

I am pretty proud of myself that I have not been swayed to go to any movies so far over the Hoildays. In most cases after taking my kids to the movies I feel I have wasted my money and my time. I just feel that the movie companies have stolen from me each and every time I walk into a movie theater. Now when I watch a DVD at home I NEVER have that feeling.
I remember going to see Narnia and being thrilled I went. That is about the last time I felt good about a movie. I am amazed at how so many families just go over and over to the movies. I frankly could not justify it as a frugal person.

I think as frugal people we have to be on our guard as far as entertainment goes. Plenty of cheaper alternatives. Plus I hear all the talk about recession and again movies are way down on my spend list. Saving is way up on the list.

For some people it is an either/or proposition.

They don't go on fancy vacations, but spend more on eating out and movies or concerts for entertainment.

I'm on the tightwadary side of doing a bit of all of them - only on the cheap. We go to the matinee movies for most all of the movies we see. It is now $2.50 at our local theatre if we get there for shows that start before 6 pm. It's easy to do for us as Hubster does not enjoy going to the theatre, while for me it is way better than watching at home. So, the boys and I go during the days (they are both off on some weekdays so off we go on those afternoons to enjoy a cheap thrill.)

Now, if I was paying $8-12 a head to get in, NO WAY would I enjoy it!!

I cannot remember the last movie Hubby and I went to alone. Seriously, it is not coming to mind. We did take the kids over Thanksgiving to see Bee Movie and for all 4 of us at 3:30 in the afternoon it cost $26 just for tickets. We got the kids a drink to share and a medium popcorn to share and that was almost $8. It reminded me of why I don't go to the movie theater. We usually rent or get pay-per-view. My 9 year old also love to browse the VHS and DVDs at our library. And its FREE! (yes, we still have a VHS player--it is in the playroom)

Same here! I will only go to a movie theater if I know I will like the movie or actor in it. Lately I have been getting tons of new releases from the library, and after watching them I am very glad I didn't spend $8 to see that.

I even cancelled my netflix. Now I do RED BOX. $1 for one night per DVD. Or free from the library OF COURSE.
My own NEW YEAR resolution is to read MORE! My sister gave me a paperback book she heard on tape for Christmas so I have stack of good reading material. I need to be a better example to my kids and that includes reading! Plus to be honest my ex takes the kids to movies, concerts, basketball games, rodeos, theater events, football games and the like. So if we both did it our kids would be overly spoiled. I don't think he likes just hanging out with the kids like I do at home...he is more on the go sorta dad. Which is a good balance for co-parenting.

We rarely go to the movies either. The last movie we saw in the theatres was Harry Potter 5 at the IMAX. And I think the 4th Harry Potter movie was what we went to see before that. We buy DVDs on occasion if it is a movie we really want to see, but only after it's been on sale for a while and the price has come down.

We only go to a movie about once a year. And at matinee times. I can't justify going at these prices more than that. Especially since they were around fifty cents or thereabouts when we were kids. For a double feature on Saturdays! I know things go up, but wow.

Wow $2.50 for a movie, I wish. The cheapest around here is $9!

I love seeing movies in the movie theater. 90% of the time though, when I go to see a movie, it is at the dollar theater (although their matinee price went up to $1.50 recently.)

There are, however, sometimes movies that I want to see first run -- such as "Charlie Wilson's War" with Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts (two of my fave actors). I went to see it last weekend during the matinee time at a theater that only charges $4.

The one thing I almost NEVER do is buy food or drink at the movies. It is so overpriced in the first place, and in the second place there is not anything even remotely healthy.
