Family Parties

March 30th, 2008 at 11:40 pm

When I was married my ex's family celebrated every birthday in his family with a large party including a huge meal.
Now that I am divorced I am now free of these large cumbersome burdens of entertaining constantly. Each cousin, brother, sister in law.....mother in law, granny, aunt...you name it we had to have a party for them. Basically they partied with food if you sneezed it seemed! I am not against family time but having to do it about every other weekend grew to be just too much. Plus the cost involved to feed about 20-40 people at one time was ridiculous! I feel such a release from all that entertaining. I feel released from trying to impress everyone. It is amazing how much time and energy and money I put into these events.

What a wonderful place to be in my life.....

What are some things you have given up or have made an effort to reduce? Have you purged an area of your life and made an effort to live more simply and more honestly with your time, energy and resources???? It is always good to review ones self to see waht areas we need to work on from time to time.

I have given up maintaining gel nails (approx. $50/month), and getting hair cuts & colors at an expensive salon ($160 a pop every 8 weeks).

wow---that could really add up. I color my own hair. I never did it till a gf encouraged me a bit. Now I love to do it myself. My dd is actually really good at hair color stuff. I gave up the gym and personal training a long LONG time ago....that also added up. I have given up magazine subscriptions as well. I still have a few but when they stop I will not re-new. The library is my new best bud for reading material. I also used to bless everyone when it was their Birthday---now only special people get birthday gifts or even a card. We have to make choices. It feels good to make new choices!

Well as much as I like clothes I use to spend close to about $500+ a month and not realizing it on clothes I have really cut back. Some months I spend nothing on clothing and some about $120, far less than I use to. I also stop going out so much to clubs that would easily run me about $400 a month, now I simply go out when it is Free to get in and free to drink until a certain time which in the end I may only spend about $10 in gas or maybe buy one drink that is not on the list for free drinks

No magazine subscriptions for me other than Hubster's AARP.

Color my own hair - have done it since forever.

I don't thrift, garage sale, or auction shop as much anymore. I do some for my junque booth, but not nearly as much as I used to. I just frankly don't NEED the stuff. I need assets that produce a positive cash flow!
Now it's more of a treat when I do go shop those places.

Indescriminate grocery shopping. I try to always go w/menu & list in hand now.

I decided to stop eating out, except for very rare special occasions. I stopped going to TJ Maxx! I stopped spending hundreds of dollars on birthdays and Christmas. That was per kid, not total! I started thrift shopping for clothing, and have found beautiful, expensive clothes, for pennies on the dollar. I started planning meals around loss leaders, and we eat well, on very little. I buy kid's toys on clearance, after Christmas, and keep a supply on hand for birthdays and Christmas. I turn the thermostat down to sixty at night. I group errands, like banking, shopping, etc. thus cutting down on gasoline use.
I make saving a priority, not an afterthought. I gladly accept books, passed on by family members, or purchase them very inexpensively at thrift shops. Then, I take them to a used book store for credit toward other books. There are lots of other behaviors, that I have formed to save, but they are such a part of me now, I just take them for granted.

This year I won't travel. I used to travel several times a year. Domestically and internationally. Now, because of money restraints and school commitments my next planned trip isn't until March 2009.

travel is a real rare occurance for me...I let my kids' dad take them to far off places. It makes it a special thing with them and dad. I like being a home body! My friend took her 2 grandkids to an indoor water park for one day and one night....the cost ?? Around $500. I thought that was alot......things are not cheap.
