Less Plastic bags

April 12th, 2008 at 02:43 pm

I have noticed after I grocery shop and the clerks are bagging my groceries they get annoyed with me! I will simply place many of my groceries right back in the cart without bagging them. I simply roll the cart out to my car and load them in the trunk. Simple. I will use some bags...but why bag a loaf of bread or a bag of chips....or OJ?? I also live about 2 mins from the store....so I am close. These store clerks look at me like I am from Mars and that I am ungrateful for not wanting bags or their help?? When I ask them kindly to un-bag them....they give me looks to kill!!! I do try to tell them right away and or offer to help with my purchases. I thought we were all trying to be more green?? I just find that odd. I also have had that happen over and over at Wal-Mart. Anyone had that happen to them?? Why do they need to bag my box of tennis shoes or cat liter? Odd to say the least....maybe old habits die hard?? less bags I think is a good thing.

No one ever gives me funny looks. I don't think they generally care at all how I take my groceries out. Maybe they are just wishing you would have told them "no bags, please" before they bagged the things up. Some times I find it easier to deal with even a single item bagged. A package of toilet paper or a five pound bag of potatoes is easier for me to walk home with or to secure to my bike if it is in a bag with handles.

I love grocery store plastic bags. I use them to line my little waste containers throughout the house. The prices you pay for products factor in you are going to use them.

I used to take bags to reuse for my Aldi trips. But now, I take clothes baskets that fit just perfectly into the shopping cart. Anything I buy that doesn't come by the case goes into the laundry baskets. Makes it easier to carry into the house also, and keeps them from moving about in the truck.

I use baskets sometimes as well.....I do use groceries bags for trash bags too. I just don't need hundreds of them! I have not purchased large kitchen trash bags for about two years now. I love saving money.

I find that I say "I don't need a bag" but they put stuff in the bag anyway. I think they're on autopilot.

Working in a retail store, I think I can give the cashier's point of view. Smile
Please remember that a cashier sees hundreds of people every day, and not everyone is as nice as you. There are some customers that come in our store, that will literally look for ANY reason to complain or get rude with you. It's like they don't have any control over how crappy their own day has been, so they're going to take control and make someone else's crappy.

I don't really care if someone wants a bag or not, but it is a little annoying when they sit silently and watch me bag their items, and then end up throwing the bags back in my face because they don't want them. If you are that adament about not taking extra bags, then tell me ahead of time, or recycle them yourself. When you have to unbag stuff, it just makes a huge clutter because they won't go back on the hook after being taken off.

And as for being on autopilot - that's probably a little true, but only for efficiency. If 9 out of 10 people that come through your line want their small bag of kitty litter in a bag, then it saves time and effort to just go ahead and bag it without asking, instead of having to wait for a good moment to ask if they want it in a bag (like when they aren't counting out cash or using the credit card machine).

Plus, alot of people prefer the bags for the handles, because it's much easier to carry 2 liters of pop, kitty litter, milk, OJ, bread, and chips in one trip if you have handles to grab.

But that's just my 2 cents. Big Grin

All true. I've worked in retail and some folks do like to kick you around... I guess it's just going to take more time to get everyone more used to reusable bags.

I agree...I used to be in retail and it amazed me how some people treat the store clerks. I do notice at the nicer high end store that I shop at once in a while....they ask first about your "bag preference" They have plastic and paper and they will bag as you wish. It is always a pleasant exchange and I am always grateful for that personal touch. Some stores...they are way too busy for that. I did notice the other day they now have a sign up to remind the store help to put at least a certain amount of items in each bag if possible.....that is a nice way to remind people I think.

I guess just thinking ahead a bit and being kind---you can never go wrong.
